Ted Clark – Sociability

“Who’s going to be there?”

[The] first time that I came back to Spokane and went into a gay bar, as a gay person, I had that mental like, “Oh God. You’re going to walk into a gay bar in your hometown. Who’s going to be there?” And somewhere it escaped me—the fact that if they’re there, it doesn’t matter that they know you’re there. [Laughs.] By then I had been into a lot of bars up and down the California coast, and Chicago, and Atlanta, as I was traveling. So I was used to [gay] bars, but coming into one in Spokane was like, “Oh dear.”
